Open the door to learning.
Philosophy
Learner Centric
How one person learns may be completely different from another. I incorporate all learning styles into everything I create.
Behavior Focused
Learning should create behavior change. I’ve taken an interest in behavioral science and am learning how to apply that to my work.
Simplistic
“Knowledge is the process of piling up facts; wisdom lies in their simplification.” -Martin H. Fischer
Taking complex content and designing it in a way that everyone can understand.
Connected Ideas
How can something you do in your day-to-day life help you learn new concepts? I look for ways to connect unrelated topics that help get the learner to that “aha” moment.
eLearning Process
My instructional design process includes multiple checkpoints, building on content at each step.
Needs.
Sometimes, learning isn’t the answer (wait, what?). The Needs Assessment is standard in instructional design. I take time to ask questions about the audience and their skill level, the gap in skills, knowledge, or attitude, and the end goal. All of these questions help me determine if the gap is a result of training, tools, coaching, or simply a conversation.
Outline.
Once the plan of action is determined, I begin with a simple outline to learn what high-level topics need to be covered and to decide on the strategy for the learning.
Design.
The design process will go through multiple iterations. I start by creating a basic storyboard to finalize the content and design interactions. Then, I’ll start incorporating the design of the entire eLearning into the storyboard so the end result is almost a demo of the final eLearning.
Development.
Development is completed in Adobe Captivate, Articulate Storyline, or Trivantis Lectora and tested throughout. I use other tools to help in the design, like InDesign, or if there are photography or video needs, Photoshop and Premiere Pro.
